Everlasting Water

by Elizabeth Haarberg

Jesus is the water that gives us life.

“WAIT and listen, everyone who is thirsty! Come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Yes, come, buy [priceless, spiritual] wine and milk without money and without price [simply for the self-surrender that accepts the blessing].”
Isaiah 55:1 (AMPC)

Water is the best cure for thirst. Not many would argue this point. When I’ve been running or working outdoors, all I want is a cold glass of ice water. It’s the greatest remedy for a dry throat. I can feel it running down my throat into my stomach, refreshing everything it touches.

Water is the physical element that mirrors the spiritual water that Jesus offers everyone.

“…but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 4:14

The spiritual water Jesus gives flows out of us to offer others a drink from the same fountain. This is how we become vessels.

“Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.”
2 Timothy 2:21

How do we become clean? Surrender to God and let the Holy Spirit have His way with us. The Holy Spirit fills us with the water Jesus offers the world when He gave His life. Within this water is the fruit of the spirit. (Galatians 5:22-23)

How do we eat and drink with no money? Jesus is the living water and the bread of life. Everything we need is in Him. This reality may be difficult for most new Christians but it is something we realize as we progress in our relationship with Him.

Just as water flows, our relationship with Jesus moves and changes as we get to know the Trinity in a more intimate way. He’s just waiting for us!
