Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9 New International Version (NIV)

I’ll never forget my first ride on a zip line. It was about 1,500 feet long and relatively close to the ground. I was securely fastened by our guide, but when I climbed the ladder I froze, feeling waves of anxiety. I was unexpectedly overwhelmed and filled with uncertainty. I imagined the line snapping, or the harness breaking under my weight.

As I stood there, almost in tears, my companions tried to assuage my concerns and encouraged me to let go and trust the line. Finally, the guide suggested I sit on the platform, knowing that when she let go of the harness, gravity would pull me off and send me sailing to the other side. There was nothing I could do as I slid off of the platform.

For a moment, I was terrified. However, soon I felt the exhilaration of flying. It was fantastic! In fact, I hiked back to the other side and did it again.

Many of us can remember a first-time experience that required facing a primal fear. Sometimes we decide to take “a leap of faith.” At those times, we trust God and move forward. Uncertain of the future, we can stay close to God, talk to him in prayer, and be assured that he is by our side, no matter what.

Jesus understands how we feel. As Judas approached Gethsemane accompanied by soldiers and Pharisees, Jesus was troubled and filled with sorrow as he prayed to his Father (Matt 26:36). Fully God, he knew this was the plan for our salvation. Fully man, he was overwhelmed to the point of death, then said, “Yet not what I will, but what you will.” (Mark 14:36).

When we’re facing an uncertain or fearful situation, remember that Jesus experienced those feelings as well. At bedtime, give your fears to the Lord. He’ll be up all night, anyway.

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
Matthew 28:20b NIV
