“Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young – a place near your altar, Lord Almighty, my King and my God.”
Psalm 84:3 New International Version
High upon Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Oregon, there is a nesting place, a set aside sanctuary for cormorants and puffins and guillemots. They are all ocean birds and high atop a rock surrounded by waves, they find their home.
The Psalmist in today’s verse is standing in the temple of the Lord and sees that small birds have found a nesting place high up in the upper reaches of the house of God. And the writer says, “Blessed are those who dwell in Your house; they are ever praising You!” (Psalm 84:4)
Have you found a safe place to dwell in the midst of this perilous life? In the midst of war and disease and fear and grief and despair, do you have a protected place, a sanctuary, a place of peace? Does your soul cry out like David, “Flee like a bird to your mountain!” (Psalm 11:1c)
To whom or where shall we flee? We shall flee to the Lord Almighty, to our gracious and loving King and God. We shall flee to His grace and mercy, to His presence, to be protected under the shadow of His wings. We shall find sanctuary, joy and peace, refuge, protection and safety only in His promises, His Word, His unfailing love.
The God who did not hold back even His own Son, but gave Him up for you, will He not protect you and give you all that you need? In Him alone you find your peace and your hiding place. Amen.
