A Simple Statement

Victory in a Cross?

“But thanks be to God!  He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 15:57 New International Version

It was just a simple act of devotion at the little church. On Easter morning, a couple of the members took the Good Friday cross outside, draped it with a white cloth, and put a few flowers around it. People drove by and saw it that Easter Sunday and probably said, “Oh, look, how beautiful,” and thought no more of it.

But when I saw the cross as I drove by, it gave me second thoughts. A simple statement, actually a profound statement of faith was made by that cross. It said, “Our Lord Jesus, the Son of God, died upon His cross, but we don’t believe He stayed dead. Oh, no, we believe He rose again on the third day, and He proclaimed victory over sin and death and the devil. And we wanted the whole world to know that He is Lord, the Lord of life forever.  And in Him we are saved from sin and death and the grave. That’s why we put this cross here on Easter Sunday.  It is our victory symbol!”

My message to you who are believers in our risen Lord is this, make that simple statement of faith wherever you go. In a world full of the fear of death, a world ruined by sin, proclaim victory in our Lord Jesus Christ. He is risen from the dead and so we, too, shall live forever.

Lord Jesus, give me courage to state my faith in Your cross and resurrection. Thank you for Your victory that saves me and gives me eternal life! Amen.
