“Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it.”
Psalm 119:35 English Standard Version

I’m not a fan of alleys. Many of them are narrow, and are littered with trash bins and weeds. They usually send a chill to my back, and I do not walk through them.

I went to a Colorado Rockies baseball game. I parked the car in a garage two blocks away. The attendant noticed that I was alone, and warned me to be careful. As I exited the garage, I saw this alley. The word “welcome” was etched into the concrete walk in numerous languages. For a moment I forgot what the attendant said, and I walked into the alley. Alone.

There was almost no one in the alley besides me. As I walked along the concrete cobblestones, I saw a corn-hole game set up for any passers-by who’d like to take a moment to play. Further down, there was a time capsule marker reminding people to open it in 2068. I continued to zig-zag down the alley, like a child, because there were bronze plaques embedded in the walkway, each one containing a whimsical saying.

My heart was lighter when I came out at the end of the alley, and I walked on to the ballpark. Had I not chosen the path of the alley, I would have missed out on a delightful stroll.

The alley reminded me that that is how I sometimes spend time with God in the Word, usually when I’m in Psalms or Proverbs. I’ll bounce from verse to verse, and I find a gem, or two, that speaks to my heart that day. Every day in the Word can bring discoveries, even when we’ve read through a passage once before. The revelation never ends.

“Make me to know your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation, in you I wait all the day long.”
Psalm 119:35 English Standard Version

When you see your Bible on the table, or on your phone, take a moment and stroll through it. You may find a gem in a couple of minutes that will brighten your day. May your time in God’s Word reveal the delights of his wisdom!
