An Ocean of Strength

God is more powerful than any peril we face.

But now, O Jacob, listen to the Lord who created you.
O Israel, the one who formed you says,
‘Do not be afraid, for I have ransomed you.
I have called you by name; you are mine.
When you go through deep waters,
    I will be with you.
When you go through rivers of difficulty,
    you will not drown.’”
Isaiah 43:1-2 New Living Translation

A stunning ocean sunrise is one of the most admired sights in this world. As Christians, we attribute this beautiful handiwork to God, and delight in His great power, strength, and glory revealed in creation. While we enjoy the ocean’s beauty, we also know dangers lurk there. Signs warn of red flag days with wind and currents so strong that you can be pulled under by the hidden riptide. Other days, sharks might swim too close for comfort. Some days, giant waves threaten to sweep you into the deep and drown you.

Even though we are surrounded by God‘s amazing creation and brilliant presence, our eyes often fix on life’s daily hazards. Waves of anxiety, pulled under by debt or illness, or swimming against a sea of unwanted change may overcome our peace and threaten to swallow us up like a giant wave.

Yet our God, Creator of the seas, the skies, and the universe holds all the power, majesty and might needed to rescue us from our ocean of fears and return us to firm ground. He always keeps working for us, His loved and redeemed children. Even the most troubling and strength-sapping problems are no match for our God who is stronger than anything we face. Run from life’s overwhelming waves into His arms and you will find safety and rest. Let each beautiful sunrise remind you to focus on His glorious light, all the days of your life.
