“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
1 John 4:1 English Standard Version

I’ve always had a problem with hero worship. It really rubs me the wrong way. That doesn’t mean it’s not wonderful to have people to imitate and look up to: parents, mentors, teachers, friends. But when we place people on a pedestal, we can forget that they are human beings who make mistakes and are flawed.

I especially think this can be dangerous when we put those in leadership up on a pedestal and begin to trust everything they say, ignoring red flags about their behavior and words. This is important to remember especially as election season comes upon us!

So should we just distrust everyone we want to admire? Of course not. But as the verse from 1 John says, we can test and observe. We can be aware, so that we’re not falling for something or someone who is NOT perfect, like our kitty in this picture pretending to be an Easter decoration!

The one human we can imitate without hesitation is Jesus. We can follow his example of love and humility, knowing that he is the ONLY human who is true God and true man. Praise God for that perfect example to follow!
