“And so from this one man, and he as good as dead, came descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as countless as the sand on the seashore.”
Hebrews 11:12 New International Version
“Can I trust you?”
The answer to that simple question is so very important. Can I trust this person? Am I able to trust them to keep their promises, to do what they say, to be trustworthy?
Unfortunately, the answer to that question about trustworthiness is so often, “No!” Given human sin and weakness, many people are not trustworthy and break their promises. They cannot be trusted!
But what about God? Is God different? When God promised Abraham that he would have descendants as countless as the sand in the seashore, it seemed that God would not keep His promise. Abraham was beyond being able to father a child, he and Sarah had already waited 25 years for the promise to come true, and hope was fading fast.
But the Lord continued to repeat his promises and Abraham continued to believe Him. And even when Abraham was tested to offer up his only son, Isaac, as a sacrifice, Abraham continued to trust God.
This trust the Bible calls faith, and it is a gift sent from God that we might believe in all the promises of the Lord. Like Abraham, we trust that God will keep His promises, even when the circumstances seem otherwise. And the greatest promise that God ever gave was that “whoever believes in Him (God’s Son, Jesus) would not perish but have eternal life!” (John 3:16)
You can trust God’s promise of salvation in our Lord Jesus Christ. You can trust all of His good and loving promises for you as His son or daughter. God is trustworthy and will always keep His promises to you… Amen.
