Back to Basics

A humbling place.

“…unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”
Matthew 18:2

It had been a long time since I lived in a dorm room. The visit to seminary made me think back to my student days, starting out with a sense of wonder, humbleness, and feeling very inadequate.

However, that is not such a bad place to be…a place where I feel as if I am back to the basics, and back to being like a little child. All the accumulation of knowledge, possessions, and authority over the years does not really change where I stand with God. When I stand before the King of the Universe, I am back to the basics.

What are the basics? I am weak, helpless, and very insignificant before God. I have nothing to bargain with to make myself feel important, worthy, or wise, but my Heavenly Father, in His mercy and goodness, has loved me and sent His only Son for me. He has given me eternal life, and a place in His kingdom. He provides all that I need for this life, and the next. I may be weak, helpless, and not very wise, but my Father loves me and He is Lord of all! Because I am His son, I am not afraid!

I am not afraid of the big bad world, the devil, nor even death itself. It is not because I am strong, or wise, that I have courage. It is because my Father is strong, and wise, that I have no fear.

Going back to basics is a good thing! Sometimes I just need to be reminded that I am weak, He is strong, I am His child through Jesus Christ, and that has changed everything!
