Building Up, Not Tearing Down

by Desiree Bustamante

As Christ builds our foundation in Him, we are to build up others in Christ.

“Christ died for us so that, whether we are dead or alive when he returns, we can live with him forever. So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.”
1 Thessalonians 5:10-12 New Living Translation

There are so many malicious words and hostile messages expressed these days that are intended to destroy someone. It’s effortless to tear down another person for their looks, opinions and values and there are countless opportunities to do this on social media and other ways of communication.

Jesus asks us to build one another up. Not by using a Facebook meme or a generic platitude, but in a way that honors Christ’s love for each individual—recognizing and affirming their gifts from God, their purpose and that they are uniquely created by Him.

Just as there must be a solid foundation on which to build a sound structure, we need a firm foundation in Christ. We must be assured of His great love for us and that our value lies in Him. Then we can clearly see the true worth of others through Christ’s eyes and care for them as He asks us to do.

I’m sure there are many people in your life who need encouragement and affirmation in these days of angry rhetoric, bullying and abusive comments. Take a moment today to show someone that they are loved dearly and were made for a special purpose, by the God who created them in His image. Words of grace and love are the most valuable way to encourage those to not lose heart. Encourage others to have hope in Christ, who has freed us from the power of words that tear down, with words of His truth that only build up.
