Christmas Battles

Finding true joy at Christmas.

A friend of mine is at war with her cat. Each year he systematically attempts to ruin her Christmas tree. She has discovered half eaten felt angels drowned in the cat’s water dish, amid broken glass ornaments. This year, there is a massive hole in the branches where it looks like a cannonball shot through. She keeps the cat locked away from the tree at night, and has attempted deterrents such as orange peels (which the cat ate).

It often feels like a losing battle, but my friend has not given up. She just ordered a tree alarm hoping the noise will scare the cat away, and that her other deaf cat will not set it off without noticing.

Her continuing saga is both hilarious and heart breaking. The angels were made by her mother who is no longer here to make new ones. Her tree is not haphazardly thrown together as mine often is, but decorated thoughtfully and beautifully.  It is a centerpiece in her home displaying the light and love of Christmas. Yet my friend continues to exude joy, knowing that it is not the outer displays that are the heart of celebration.

My friend is not alone. Many of us have our own Christmas time battles. They come in the form of relationships, sickness, finances, court battles, broken things, and broken people. At times all we can do is laugh, or sometimes just cry. The question becomes whether or not we allow what is happening to steal our joy. What is the centerpiece of your heart that displays light and love at Christmas?

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.”
Luke 2:10-11 New American Standard Bible

We need not fear, or focus, on the battles around us. Focus on Christ, who humbled himself and was born in a manger. Find peace in the love and joy in His light at Christmas, and always.

  1. Thanks for your post today. The battles may not always be huge, but they’re still there nagging at my joy. Blessings!

  2. Thanks, Richelle–this is beautiful. My mom battled depression every year at Christmas. What a great reminder that not all we battle is seen or easily glued back together.
