Deep Prayer

By Pastor Steve Nickodemus

His Song is With Me

“Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and waves have gone over me.  By day the Lord commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.”
Psalm 42:7-8 English Standard Version

As I stare at the water pouring down over the cliff, I am lost in the magnificence, the power, the beauty, the depth of God’s handiwork, a cascade of an unrelenting stream surging down, down, down, into an enormous bubbling pool.  I have viewed South Falls hundreds of times in my life, but every time I experience it, I am drawn into its mystery, its, beauty, its joy within me.

Deep prayer feels that way; pouring out my heart to God in an unrelenting stream, lost in the beauty and the power and glory of a Father who loves me and wants to hear my deepest cry.  This is intimacy at its deepest level, a joy of knowing the Creator of the universe who knows my every struggle, every thought, every failure, every cry.  I cry out in the depth of my my soul, “Why do you love me so much?  Why do you care about this wayward sinner, this tarnished creature of yours?”

And his answer comes back to me like living water pouring into my soul, “I have chosen you and I love you and you are my son.  Because of Jesus I am well pleased with you!”  For I have been baptized into the death and life of Jesus my Lord, and in his love and life I am cleansed and given new life and sent out to share his life giving grace.

Again and again I return to this waterfall.  And again and again I am awed by its majesty and beauty and power.  And again and again I return to my Lord.  And again and again I am awed by his grace and his love and his forgiveness.

Lord, pour your living water over me daily.  Thank you, O God, that you have chosen me to be yours, to be washed clean and renewed in Jesus. Amen…
