Unto a Thousand Generations

“But showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.”
Exodus 20:6 New International Version

If you were passing by this old farm house you would notice the beautiful blooming azaleas, but what you would not see is the enduring legacy of five generations of faithful believers who have lived in that house.

This farm house is where I grew up.  My great grandfather bought this farm in 1910 when this house had just been built. He settled here because there was good farm land and a German Lutheran congregation just a half mile away.  Five generations later the legacy of my great grandfather is still with my family.

The legacy is not just the house and the farm which my sister keeps up nicely, but there is the legacy of faith in which my great grandfather based his life and family.  He and his wife and their children and their children’s children’s children have continued to follow the Lord Jesus and trust in Him above all else.  Many of us are scattered now across the United States, but the legacy of the love of Jesus Christ for us unites us and sustains us in a way that goes far beyond this old farm house.

Houses may come and houses may go, but the Word of our God stands forever.  What will we take with us out of this life?  We will not take houses or land or money or any other earthly possession, but God’s love for us will endure forever.

Do you want a legacy that lasts forever?  Then pass down to your children the only legacy that endures forever, our trust in our Lord Jesus Christ and His love that never ends.

His Word endures forever!
