“Look straight ahead,
and fix your eyes on what lies before you.
Mark out a straight path for your feet;
stay on the safe path.
Don’t get sidetracked;
keep your feet from following evil.”
Proverbs 4:25-27 New Living Translation
Marketing experts would not like these verses. So many commercials tell us we must follow our own path, take roads less traveled, pursue risk-taking activities for thrills and in defiance of a boring life. Our lives are meant to be full of adventure and no one should stand in our path of pursuing exciting experiences.
While there are adventures in life awaiting us, they can lead to our enrichment or to our destruction. We have many examples in Scripture of those who chose a life of power, wealth or disobedience and who came to a gruesome end. These warn us of the consequences when we pursue a destructive path in life. Mercifully, other verses tell us how to stay on the straight road, to fix our eyes on only one thing in life—Jesus.
In our world there are so many voices that seem reliable and credible that we can easily get confused trying to determine what path we should take. But if we spend time in God’s word and in prayer, learning who He really is, we will be able to discern His voice from worldly and misleading messages. Pray these words from King David, a man who sought out God and tuned out all voices but His:
“Show me the right path, O Lord;
point out the road for me to follow.
Lead me by your truth and teach me,
for you are the God who saves me.
All day long I put my hope in you.”
Psalm 25:4-5 New Living Translation
