“O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.”
Psalm 63:1 English Standard Version

Do you ever feel spiritually dry? It’s that feeling where you don’t sense God is with you, and you don’t see any purpose for what is going on around you. It is as if you are in a desert, where there is no water, no sustenance, and no hope. The good news is that, no matter how you feel, as a believer you already have the Holy Spirit. It is the living water that Jesus explains to the woman at the well in the fourth chapter of John’s gospel.

This might sound disappointing, because you want things to feel right. When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, shouldn’t things feel right? Well, this life is difficult. While we have the Spirit, we also have the old Adam living in us, waging war in our hearts.

The Holy Spirit works faith in our lives as this war rages in us, faith that holds onto the Gospel of Christ. What Christ promises in His death and resurrection can never run dry. It is eternal, and He gives us life.

In those times when we feel spiritually dried up, remember who you are. You are a baptized child of God, adopted into the kingdom of God by grace through faith. He’s given you that water as a free gift!

“For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God”
Romans 8:15-16 English Standard Version

When your soul thirsts for God go to His Word and be filled, and refreshed, with the grace of God so that you may have assurance.
