In the book, The Unfinished Angel, the author writes of a character who buries her feelings under a tough exterior. Over the course of her life, she adds layers to make her exterior tougher, but her feelings are described as soft, like the interior of the egg.
Can you imagine whacking an egg on the counter, only to find you can’t even make it crack? It would seem to be as hard as a rock. For that matter, we don’t think that a rock can break like an egg. A rock is solid, hardened all the way through.
Today, I scrambled a couple of eggs for breakfast. Their shells gave way easily and I poured their contents into a small bowl. They were whisked vigorously and poured into the hot skillet, where the heat transformed them into fluffy mounds of nutrition.
I transformed the egg, which in turn is transforming me. God does something like that with our hearts.
When we go through the hurts of life, we too add a layer on our exterior shells. We learn to stop crying at the drop of a hat (although one or two people may still be able to bring us to tears). We do whatever we can to protect our hearts.
Yet, God – dear God, our Savior and Redeemer – can crack our shells with a single whack. He does this not to hurt us further, but to reach our hearts, where he transforms us into a new creation. The Holy Spirit counsels and comforts us, and directs us on God’s path for our lives.
“Then you will understand what is right and just
and fair—every good path.
For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
Discretion will protect you,
and understanding will guard you.”
Proverbs 2:9-11 New International Version
Whether you are scrambled, over easy, or sunny side up, God is transforming your heart every day.
