Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit. Jeremiah 17:7-8 ESV

I love seeing these beautiful magnolia trees when we travel to the southern states. They almost look and feel fake. The leathery/waxy texture of the leaves and the beauty of the blooms cause you to pause. I don’t know how many times I stood near one of these trees during our recent trip to Tennessee. Though the heat and humidity are not ideal for me personally, it’s very clear the magnolia was made to thrive there.

The expression “bloom where you’re planted” tends to get tossed around when we are searching for uplifting words of encouragement. The colloquialism seems especially ideal when we, or those we love, are questioning a particular season. Many in my circle are experiencing a transition time within their churches. Others are in a completely new and different season of life. Sometimes it can be hard to navigate change. We might question when, why or how. We like to have all the answers…right now!

The truth of the matter is we can’t and shouldn’t know what’s ahead. It’s also foolish to focus on the “what ifs.” What we know is that we serve a good God, worthy of all our praise. In Him we place full confidence and trust in our future. We were created exactly who we are and how we are. He has called us to be people of God. Because of His strength, we endure, persevere and withstand storms. Because of His love, we are freed from the bondage of sin. We are enabled to shine in a dark world and give Him glory in all circumstances. We have opportunities every day to proclaim the good news and share the reason for the hope we have. No matter what, God is with us. We are in this season now because He has work for us to do. Let’s bloom!
