Fear and Wisdom

A Practice

He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name! The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever! Psalm 111: 9-10, English Standard Version

Fear is a common foothold. All humans struggle with varying degrees of fear and anxiety. It’s been this way since sin entered our world. Broken, exposed and ashamed, Adam and Eve tried to hide, in fear of their disobedience.

Much like Adam and Eve, fear can overwhelm our thinking. It can break down our resolve, rapidly steal our joy and start hissing harmful lies. Fear of reproach, judgement and displeasing others might mute our faith. This kind of worry about human opinions can cause us to stumble, compromise our beliefs or even shift to align with the world’s “standards” for living.

But the kind of fear used in today’s Psalm is different, isn’t it? This fear is one that recognizes the Lord as the Maker, Sustainer and Ruler of all. It’s reverent, humbling and, unlike other versions of fear, produces understanding and contentment.

The beginning of wisdom starts with healthy fear and praise of the One who called life into existence. This same God fearfully and wonderfully knit together you, me and all we see. He sent HIs son to save the world so that whoever believes in Him would not fear the strongholds of sin, shame or death; but would find life in the righteousness won for us on the cross.

To fear the Lord is to know Him, to understand His truth and His plans/purpose for our lives. To know Him, we spend time in Word and worship. Today, we pray for understanding, Lord. Help us abide in you and your Word so that we might love and fear you with all our heart.
