Focus Above

The Heavens Are Declaring!

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”
Psalm 19:1 English Standard Version

When I took this picture, I was so struck by these feather-like clouds that I had to take out my phone and try to capture them. But after I took it, I barely looked at the picture again. I didn’t like that the bottom of the picture was so mundane: just somebody’s truck, somebody’s house, a street in a suburban neighborhood. However, when I came across this picture again today, I thought “Wow!  Look at those clouds! Look at that blue sky!” I barely noticed the other things, the “boring” part of the picture.

I think it’s easy to lose our focus in life by the boring and mundane things. Here we go, we feel, just another day of work and housework and driving from one place to the next and figuring out what to have for dinner and going to bed to do it all again tomorrow. When things get like this, I start to feel dragged down, and like there’s nothing to look forward to.

But God calls us to look up! To keep our focus on Him. Scripture says:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Romans 12:2 ESV

When we start to get caught up in the mundane, a renewal of mind is exactly what we need. I pray for myself and for you that God will help us to not be conformed, but to look up. And may the beauty of the heavens, declaring His glory right there above us, be a reminder of that every day!
