Finding Our Path Through God’s Word
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105, English Standard Version
We have a resident bear (or two, or three) that show up from time to time around our property in the forest. Usually the evidence left behind are tipped over trash cans and scattered trash. But occasionally, we find prints. These prints tell a story. Large, unmistakable tracks pressed into mud or snow reveal that a powerful creature has passed this way. Even if the bear itself remains hidden among the trees, its prints declare its presence, its size, and the direction it traveled. A careful observer can follow those tracks or wisely choose another route.
In much the same way, God’s Word leaves prints for us to follow. We cannot see the Lord with our physical eyes, yet He has not left us without a clear trail through the wilderness of this life. Scripture is the path He has marked out. The psalmist understood this when he wrote, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105, English Standard Version). God’s Word does not merely offer vague inspiration. It lights the very next step, showing us where to place our feet so we do not stumble into danger or wander off course.
Job described the same commitment: “My foot has held fast to his steps; I have kept his way and have not turned aside” (Job 23:11, ESV). He had determined to walk exactly where God had walked, treasuring the words of His mouth more than daily food. The prints were already there; Job simply refused to leave them.
Bears often travel the same trails year after year, placing their feet in the prints of those who went before. God’s people are called to do likewise. We do not need to blaze our own path through the confusion of culture or the darkness of our own hearts. We follow the well-worn way of obedience, humility, and faith that Scripture has already laid down.
When the way ahead feels uncertain, look for the prints. Open the Bible. There you will find the lasting, reliable marks of the One who has gone before us. His Word will keep our steps steady and lead us safely home.
