Flowering Grace

By Pastor Don Schatz

It’s In The Mail

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
John 1:14 English Standard Version

“The check is in the mail” is part of a joke these days.  Or simply an anachronism.  We deposit our checks through a Bank App on our phones.  Paychecks, even Social Security checks, are deposited automatically into our checking accounts.  One can even give an offering to church the same ways, or through the congregation’s own App or website.

God mailed his grace to humankind in the person and work of Jesus Christ.  Grace flowers into faith in the human heart and soul.  The sweet aroma of grace flavors our prayers as a pleasing scent to God.  The fruit of God’s grace blesses our Christian brothers and sisters; it blesses the church; it blesses the Lord.

Will there be flowers in the mail for you today?  Not literally, likely.  But the scent of God’s grace and loving mercy will surround you.  It always does.  The vision of God’s grace can fill the eyes of your faith as you behold again today the wonder of the greater reality of St. Paul’s “unseen things.”  These are the things of God and the realm of the Spirit.  Therein is our hope, and that hope touches us with the flowering grace of our Lord.

We live, not between two worlds, but in two worlds at once.  The power of God’s grace to sweep us up into the Father’s arms transforms us into persons of faith who know and trust God’s presence.  He is not ‘somewhere else.’  “I am with you always,” Jesus said.  We trust the grace and promise of his Word though we cannot see him.  But we know his presence with and for us.  Faith claims the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things unseen.

Look for the flowers today.  God mails them to you on the wind of the Spirit.
