Love Beyond Our Comprehension

“That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith – that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God”
Ephesians 3:16-19 English Standard Version
It is mind blowing how mind blowing the love of God is.
One of my favorite visuals of love is my little sister. She is expressive and physical and obvious in her love for others. It may have only been a week since I saw her last, but she will still come sprinting towards me and jump into my arms for a GIANT hug. She has knocked me and many others to the ground on multiple occasions. She loves hard. My dad went to visit her a year or so ago and took the bus for transportation. Chandler hopped into her car and followed the bus for many miles, until they hit the big mountain pass. She cries every time one of us leaves, even if it’s only for a handful of days.
And this reminds me of God’s love. Like a “wet sloppy kiss” as “How He Loves” describes. Like being knocked to the ground in a huge embrace. Like chasing someone down a mountain. God loves us beyond anything we see or know. He pursues us and chases after us and calls us by name. He formed us in our mother’s womb and uniquely made us in His image.
God has given us the strength of the Holy Spirit to comprehend a finite amount of His love. It’s beyond what we could understand by our own human strength. But even with the Spirit dwelling in us, helping us to see and hear God’s love, it is still beyond our human minds.
It is comforting to know that we have a God so powerful and mighty, whose love and justice and mercy, is higher and wider and deeper and longer than anything we can comprehend. And that is a God who is chasing after our hearts.
