“Come and see what the Lord has done,
the desolations he has brought on the earth.
He makes wars cease
to the ends of the earth...”
Psalm 46:8-9a New International Version
Colorado Springs has its share of hailstorms each summer. Many of them are short, with pea-sized hail stones that can rip small flowers and leaves. Occasionally, the hail is much larger and can cause physical harm and major property damage. This past week, a part of eastern Colorado Springs experienced the latter. Some of the stones were an inch across or larger and fell like rocks from the sky. Many people posted photos of their damaged cars on social media.
For them, it was one more event in a year of calamitous events.
For others, a hailstorm can be seen as a blessing. In Colorado, some of our rain evaporates before it reaches the ground. Hailstones reach the ground and melt, giving plants moisture.
“I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
Philippians 4:11b-13 English Standard Version
In Paul’s letter to the Philippians, he encourages the church to remain joyful in all circumstances. Being joyful means remembering that God is in control, no matter how uncertain our lives may seem at the moment. Going to God’s Word and being in an active relationship with Him in our prayers can help us find comfort and guidance as we travel through life.
Dear Lord, be with us as we sojourn in life. Help us remember that you are in control of our lives, even when we can’t see what lies ahead. Give us courage and help us stand firm in faith in you. Amen.
