The Lord Follows Hard After Me…

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
Psalm 23:6 New International Version

“Sunrise, sunset, sunrise, sunset, swiftly flow the years.  One season following another, laden with happiness and tears.”

So goes the lyrics from “Fiddler on the Roof”.  Day follows day, month follows month, year follows year, and soon our lives are over.  Is there any meaning to this seemingly endless cycle of birth and death and the passing of time?  Is there something more than just meaningless existence?

The Lord speaks to us in this psalm verse, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” For those who know our Lord Jesus Christ, there is mercy and goodness and God’s steadfast love all the days of our lives.  We are not alone and without meaning, but the Lord follows hard after us, constantly our companion in His love and fellowship.

And when this life’s journey is done, the Lord promises that we will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.  When the final sunset fades and this world’s light is gone, for the believer there is an eternity of joy and light and life in the presence of the Lord Jesus.  He will lead us to springs of living water and will wipe every tear from our eye and there will be joy in His presence and with all believers forever.

Sometimes this world seems like an endless, meaningless existence, but in our Lord’s promises there is hope and joy and life forever with Him!

Lord, thank you for your gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ.  We trust in you in this life and beyond. Amen.
