What Doctrine is Good Doctrine?

“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” Ephesians 4: 11-14 English Standard Version

The flags were the best way I could capture a windy day in a picture.

Have you ever been in the car on a really windy day, and your car is just getting pushed and pulled all over the road, by the wind, forcing you (or whoever is driving) to get a tighter grip on the wheel and hold fast to keep a straight course? Or maybe you’ve been on a boat, or a cruise, and the water is really choppy, which causes the boat to bounce around and you have to grab a hold of something just to keep still. This is what the world does with every individual spiritually. Think of how many religions, and worldviews, exist among our fellow human beings. Furthermore, think about how many differences there are within the Christian Church. We are constantly being bombarded with many different ideas, and doctrines. How do we know which one is correct? How are we able to keep still, and calm, in the midst of an avalanche of ideas?

The Cross! That is what we cling to! It might sound redundant, but it is redundant for a reason. If Christ did not die on the cross, take your pick as to which religion is correct or suits you. If Christ did die on the cross for our sins, and rise from death to conquer over it, that is the single most important thing that we can hold onto. Anything contrary to the death and resurrection of Christ is just wind. The cross is what we hold on to, keeping us still from the storm, and the winds, that we may not be thrown about.
