“The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sewed in his field.  It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and makes nests in its branches.”
Matthew 13:31b-32 English Standard Version

The kingdom of of God is like a seed in a garden that begins very small and ends up being very large.  What does this mean?

This means that with the smallest and most humble acts and words, the Holy Spirit takes the Good News of Jesus that is planted in people’s hearts and nurtures and grows faith in a person.  That person takes the Good News of Jesus and plants it in other’s hearts and soon there is a whole garden growing up and producing much fruit.  And then many people are attracted to this Good News that continues to grow and more and more people come into the kingdom of God.

But that huge garden begins with the simplest acts and words.  “Let me share Jesus with you.”  “May I pray for you?” “Let me help you with this.”  “Would you like to tell me your story?”  “May I tell you the story of Jesus’ love for you?”

With these simple words of love and invitation the seed is planted and begins to grow.  The seed of our words and deeds, when planted in others, will be nurtured by the Holy Spirit to bring faith and grow, at first in those we have spoken to, later in the hearts of those that they in turn will speak to.

Would you join me in speaking those words into people’s lives?  Words of Jesus’ love and sacrifice for them, words of forgiveness and hope in eternal life, words of cleansing and washing away of sins.  Please join me in the great garden of people’s hearts where the Holy Spirit wants to brings about growth springing up to eternal life!
