“Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.”

Psalm 90:10 New International Version

I recently attended my 50th high school class reunion.  That’s right, 50 years!  As my classmates and I toured the old high school building and shared stories about “the old days” in high school, I was utterly astounded by how quickly the years have gone by.  It seemed like only yesterday that I was a graduating senior.  And now I am a senior citizen!

And what those years have produced!  Yes, there are some wonderful memories, but there are also painful, sorrowful memories.  Our class ended the reunion by watching a slide show of those who have died from our graduating class.  One of them was my first wife at the age of 40 years. Yes, indeed, the years seem but “trouble and sorrow”.

And in the midst of the sorrow and pain and trouble there is God’s unfailing love, His compassion, His presence.  In the midst of loss we sing of God’s goodness and peace in Him.  For we do not have a God who casts us off like discarded dust or withered grass.  But we have a Lord who died for us and rose for us and will never forget us.  In Jesus Christ there is resurrection and hope and life.  So that even in the midst of trouble and sorrow, pain and death, there is joy and hope and an eternal, never ending home.

These words express it best:

“O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come
Be Thou our guard while troubles last
And our eternal home!”
