The Secret of Being Content

“I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” Philippians 4:11-13 NIV

What an example to follow! 

Learning contentment no matter the situation, no matter the circumstance, no matter the highs, and no matter the lows. Contentment. Completely satisfied, happiness in the present conditions, uncomplaining. 

Paul was persecuted, imprisoned, flogged, shipwrecked, and suffered much sickness. He experienced both desolation and plenty. He knew first hand the mountains and also some deep dark valleys. 

We may not be able to relate to the extent of Paul’s life and journey, but I know we can all relate to the highs and lows that come with life. There are times we cry out in deep need and there are times we feel full and comfortable. And we can look to Paul as an example through this verse. He experienced a level of suffering and trials that many of us will not have to walk through. And yet, even he learned the secret to being content. Even while in chains and behind bars. Even when death was staring him straight in the face. 

The secret to being content in all and in every single circumstance of our journey on earth is Christ. It is the power and the strength of Christ that carry us through. It is the Holy Spirit at work in us. It is leaning into our Savior and fixing our eyes to Heaven. Contentment is found as we remain Kingdom focused, knowing the end of the story. We can have contentment and confidence because we know how the story ends. We know that Christ Jesus is coming again. We know that we will have an eternal relationship with our Loving Father. It is in Christ alone that we find strength to carry on, even when we grow weary or are hungry or are discouraged in our earthly walk. The secret of being content is Christ alone.
