“The eternal God is your refuge,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.”
Deuteronomy 33:27 New International Version
“Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.” The opening line of a children’s hymn seems so straightforward. Many of us have sung this song as children, and as adult Christians we seek to know more about the nature of the Trinity. We analyze the nature of God, how he loved us and sent us a Savior. And who is the Holy Spirit, and how does it all relate to our lives?
We can spend a lifetime seeking the answer. We read the Bible, re-read the Bible, study it alone, study with others. Some study with scholars at universities and seminaries. Yet, it seems the more answers we find, the more questions we have.
Sometimes, it can help to get back to basics – the sort of basics we utilize when explaining the nature of God to a child.
God is the sovereign Lord and creator of the universe. No one created God. He has always been, always is, and always will be. I can’t see God, but he always sees me. God loves all of his creation.
He sent his son, Jesus, to be our Savior. Fully God yet fully man, he loves us with a never-ending love.
“The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.“
Galatians 2:20b New International Version
The Holy Spirit reveals the nature of God to us, in God’s perfect time. Some of us realize this when we’re children, while some of us get it when we’re older. It doesn’t matter who learns about God first, or when in one’s lifetime they realize the extent of his love for us.
Children sing, “I am Jesus’ little lamb, ever glad at heart I am.” The thief on the cross asked Jesus to “remember me when you come into your kingdom.” (Luke 23:42) Any time is God’s perfect time to call upon him.
