I Want to Be Where You are, Lord!

“Send me your light and your faithful care, let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell.”
Psalm 43:3
When I pray, “Thy will be done” to the Lord Jesus, I am saying two things. First of all, “Show me what you want of me. Give me a clear vision of where I am to go, of what you would have me do, of what you would have me say, of what you would have me give up. ” This is a good prayer, a prayer for discernment from God’s Word of what He would have from me.
Secondly, when I pray, “Thy will be done”, I am saying this also: “When you have shown me what you want of me, no matter what it is, I will follow where you lead. No matter what the sacrifice, no matter what the obstacles, no matter what my fears may be, I will follow where you lead me, Lord.”
This, I think, is the harder of the two prayers. I have sometimes wrestled with what God’s will is. But far more often and far more deeply, I have wrestled with the courage and faith to follow His will. Here is where I am too small and weak to follow Jesus. Here is where only the Spirit and the Word can sustain me.
For Jesus has gone to the cross for me, and He calls me to follow Him to that cross. As the writer of Hebrews says, “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.” (Hebrews 12:1-2)
Lord Jesus, grant me courage and faith to follow you. May your will be done… in my life. Amen.
