Life Belongs in God’s Hands

by Rev Douglas Brauner

God gives us daily bread which sustains more than our physical lives.

“In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.”
Job 12:10 English Standard Version

So, what does this verse have to do with daily bread? If you read yesterday’s Praying With The Eyes devotion then you know that this week we’re focusing on that petition of the Lord’s Prayer where we ask for God to give us our daily bread: daily because we ask God to give us what’s important for today and bread because we ask God to give us what we need, not necessarily what we want.

We ask for daily bread because daily bread belongs to God not to us.

All things that have life (and those things that do not have life) owe their existence to God who breathes life into creation. The breath we breathe originates in the breath that brought life to Adam.

“Then the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man became a living person.”
Genesis 2:7 New Living Translation

If God is the giver of life, shouldn’t we seek those things that sustain life from his hands? We deceive ourselves when we think that life is found in anything other than God.

  • Life is not found in the perfect human relationship.
  • Life is not found in the perfect job.
  • Life is not found in the perfect recreational activity.

Yes, our physical lives belong to God, but, more importantly our eternal lives belongs to him. Because of Jesus we are assured that when this life fails, we have life with the Father forever. Our eternity is in the hands of the One who has breathed his Spirit into our human existence.

The daily bread that sustains for eternity is Jesus who said,

“I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”
John 6:35 English Standard Version
