“A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children,
but the sinner’s wealth is laid up for the righteous.”

Proverbs 13:22, English Standard Version

We often buy life insurance, to provide financial security to our loved ones, in the event of our death. It is prudent, and wise, to ensure fiscal well-being, and protect accumulated wealth, especially in the case of an early departure from this earth.

Our family recently experienced a loss. I am sure that there was some type of life insurance policy in place. I am not sure a spiritual strategy was in place. Although I will not claim to know someone’s heart, when there is no outward profession of faith it is difficult to understand if a person ever believed in Christ.

Sometimes, we become so fixated on our earthly stability that we often neglect our eternal life insurance policy…salvation though Jesus Christ. While it is important to care for the financial security of our families in this life, our eternal existence should be our priority. Sadly, for most people it is not.

There is a country song that states: “You can’t take it with you when you go – never seen a hearse with a trailer hitch.” Those lyrics struck a cord with me, and they echo the gospel of Matthew. Materialism bombards us on a daily basis. If we took the time to invest in our relationship with Christ, and with each other, rather than our financial portfolio…then what wonderful treasures we would lay up for ourselves!

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth,
where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,
but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven,
where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Matthew 6:19-21, English Standard Version
