“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'”
John 8:12 English Standard Version

Not too long ago, I watched a documentary called “Jane Goodall: Reasons for Hope.” It was a lovely look at how nature that has been destroyed can be revitalized. She had a great metaphor that has stuck with me. She described hope as a light at the end of a dark tunnel. It’s there and it’s strong, but in order to access it we have to walk toward the light… otherwise it stays at the end of the tunnel.

What’s wonderful about our faith is that in the dark tunnel of human sin and suffering, God sent his son Jesus, the light of the world, to come to us! He came into the tunnel with us in order to be the light of the world. Does that mean we can just sit complacently now? Since God came down to earth for us, are we done? No, we continue to focus on His hope, knowing that His light is with us and we can shine it for others as well.

As many do, I find myself feeling down when the days are shorter. It feels like I’m living inside that dark tunnel and I forget where to look for hope. But now the days are beginning to lengthen and I feel a spring of joy when I see that light in the evenings. May the lengthening of days be a reminder of Jesus, who is still with us and still the light of the world!

“And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
