Not-So Hidden Messages

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4: 12, NIV)

Did I just hear or read that verse for the tenth time this week? Was Pastor speaking to me on Sunday? Are all these messages following me? Is God trying to tell me something?

Have you had those moments? I’m guessing so. We’ve all felt it. A passage you’ve heard before but feels like you’re  hearing for the first time. A song that reminds you of His amazing grace. A sermon directed at the heart of your struggle. An encouraging text or conversation. Coincidence? No. We know it’s intentional.

In all His wonderfully-sovereign and omniscient glory, God sent us a helper and a guide. The Holy Spirit provides us with comfort when we need it, peace that surpasses, conviction that leads to humility, along with the nudges that lead to fervent prayer and action. His Word is a communication tool that transcends time and never needs tweaking. It’s vital to our daily life — much like the vitamins and nutrients we need to remain healthy. We need the prescriptive power found in God’s word. Through various testaments and first-hand accounts, we see the Lord provide for His people. We read and understand the guidelines for living. Our eyes well with tears and our hearts break when we read about people just like us who experience the healing power of Jesus. We weep more reading of His death and resurrection — that He paid the price and we are set free. He speaks to us in the here and now. He meets us where we are. His words are never empty, and He always delivers on His promises.

We glean all of this and so much more as we continue to grow in our faith and read God’s word. Thank you, Lord, for the gift of your living word. I pray we continue to seek guidance, direction, hope, healing and understanding in the inerrant pages you so beautifully inspired. May it be a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.
