“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”
Colossians 3:2 New International Version

Our church is replacing a majority of its roof, a huge and costly job.  It requires a lot of money and a lot of trouble.

But not replacing the roof would eventually end in a terrible disaster.  The roofers have already replaced a number of pieces of underlying plywood that had rotted.  It would only be a matter of time before we would have been experiencing very costly leaks and damage.

Paul tells us that we should put our minds on things above, not on things of the earth.  Too often we ignore our relationship with God and what He is doing in our lives and in this world.  We become enamored with all sorts of mundane details of life and we forget how all of life really depends on our heavenly Father.  He created us, He sent His Son to redeem us, He provides for us, He sends His Holy Spirit to keep us in true faith in Him.  Ultimately all of us will die and we will stand before the judgment seat of God.  What will all these earthly details matter to us then?

If our relationship, our perspective, our reality with God is not correct, our lives will end in eternal disaster.  To be in a constant state of setting our minds on things above is all that truly matters in this life.  To be in a properly repentant, humble, dynamic relationship with God in Jesus Christ our Lord is far more important than all our selfish, trivial, petty affairs here on earth.  To know Him and to be saved by Him and to be constantly led by Him is to be connected with the God of the universe who loves us and gave His own Son for us…. Keep looking up!
