“How good and pleasant it is
when God’s people live together in unity!”
Psalm 133:1 New International Version
It’s wonderful to go to concerts again!
This spring, many music groups have announced a return to live performances. There is a positive energy at these concerts. Performers are excited about making music together in the same space.
Fans, having somewhere to go, are bringing their lawn chairs and gathering together.
At this concert in a church’s glen, there were many smiling faces. There was also much chatter as people connected with old friends.
Researchers have studied the biological effects on people who listen to live music. Generally, there is a correlation between listening to music and one’s overall physical and emotional well being. As people age, music can also provide additional mental stimulation, adding to their overall health. People who sing in choirs develop a mental bond when they blend their voices together.
Martin Luther, on multiple occasions, proclaimed music as a gift from God. He said, “Next to the Word of God, music deserves the highest praise. The gift of language combined with the gift of song was given to man that he should proclaim the Word of God through music.”
Throughout Old Testament history, the children of Israel would sing and play music to praise God for his grace and mercy. The book of Psalms contains songs and poems, and many of them have been set to music for centuries.
“For in the day of trouble
he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent
and set me high upon a rock.
Then my head will be exalted
above the enemies who surround me;
at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make music to the Lord.”
Psalm 27:5-6 New International Version
Whether you enjoy singing or you think you cannot, open a Psalm and shout to the Lord! Praise God, from whom all blessings flow!
