Maundy Thursday

For You

“While they were eating, Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples, and said, ‘Take, eat; this is my body.’  Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks he gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you;  for this is my blood of the* covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will never again drink of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.’  When they had sung the hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”

Matthew 26:26-30  New International Version

It is in the nature of bread
That it must be broken to be eaten
So Jesus blessed it and broke it and said
‘This is my body’

Unbroken bread looks good,
Smells good, might win a baking contest
But unbroken it’s not food,
Just a loaf of bread.

A cup of wine has aroma, weight, taste,
Texture, acidity, even finish—
But pour it and just admire it and it’s a waste;
One must leave a lip-print on the glass.

Bread-Body, broken for you
Cup-Blood shed for you
Eat it, it’s good for you
Drink it, it’s life for you

Then find a hilltop somewhere and sing to the Lord

We Pray: Lord Jesus Christ, broken for me. The mystery of this day’s meal is a tough one.
Bread and wine, body and blood, for me. The mystery of your selfless sacrifice is the
greater mystery, the mystery of love playing itself out time and time again in your
meal. Feed me, I am in need of real spiritual food. Give me to drink, I am in need of
a real spiritual quaff. Today I sing to you, even if it’s just standing on a chair and not
on a hilltop. Amen.
