“Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow.  What is your life?  You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”
James 4:14 New International Version

As I watched the funeral of my brother in law and saw the deep grief of his family, I thought of how temporary and transitory life is.  Dave had retired just three days before when he died suddenly without any warning or preparation.  Although consciously we may be able to state that our life could end without warning, subconsciously we do not really believe it.  Somehow we think that our lives will go on forever just as they are and we are shocked when death happens.

For our lives are like a mist that comes up in the early morning and by noon it is gone.  We are not in control of our length of days and in many ways we are not in control of most of our life.  If this is so, what can we trust that does not change, that will remain forever, that is permanent?

Moses, writing in Psalm 90 says this, “Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”  God is everlasting, God does not change, God is permanent and can always be trusted.  In this transitory world with our lives that can end suddenly, God and His promises never change.  The Lord can be relied upon to be there when everyone else is gone.  In the midst of death, our Lord Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life.

Perhaps the hymn writer Isaac Watts said it best:

“O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.”

When all else fails, when all else is gone, Our God is faithful and does not leave us.  We trust in Him who never changes even unto eternal life.  Amen.
