“O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.”
Psalm 71:17-18 English Standard Version

There are points, in all of our lives, where we think we have seen it all. Ecclesiastes tells us “there is nothing new under the sun” (1:9). Good or bad, there’s nothing new! The same old same old can get pretty boring. If we’re honest with ourselves, we probably go to church every so often and think to ourselves, “I’ve heard this one about a hundred times before.”

The Psalmist here writes something striking and beautiful: from youth, even from birth, all the way to death, God’s wondrous deeds never grow old. Through good times, and really bad times, God’s wondrous deeds are forever new every day.

Think about everything that goes on around us. Take a look at the news, it can be hard to find a silver lining. Sometimes it all looks lost and hopeless. Maybe you are going through something personally, or maybe you’ve been dealing with something for what seems like forever (with no end in sight). I would encourage all of us to look right through to the heart of those issues. Face those trials, temptations, and hardships, and proclaim the amazing grace of God.

From birth to death, we have the privilege of proclaiming the greatness of our God to our children, grandchildren, friends, neighbors and, yes, even our enemies. This does not come to an end in retirement, or old age. As long as you can, and with all your might, proclaim the glory of God!

That can seem like a hard thing to do considering some of our circumstances, but Paul has some encouragement for us:

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”
Romans 8:18 English Standard Version
