No Admittance!

“Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Hebrews 4:16

When I am driving down the Columbia Gorge, I love to stop at majestic Multnomah Falls, walk up to the lower view point to feel the spray from the cascading water, and experience the beauty of this wonder.

However, when I stopped a few weeks ago, I was disappointed to find a tall fence on the walkway, blocking access to the falls, with a big sign that said “No Admittance!”  Due to a recent forest fire there were unstable burned tree trunks that could fall down the mountain, and only authorized personnel were allowed close to the falls.

What a metaphor for our sinful condition before the majestic God. Because of our sin we are unable to enter into the presence of the holy God.  All of our pleas and good works will not open the palace doors, so that we might approach Him and receive eternal life.

However, thanks be to God!  God has had mercy upon us, sending His own Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, whose death upon the cross paid the price for our sin.  When Jesus died upon the cross our debt of sin was done away with, and the throne room doors swung open for us to enter into the presence of God.

God’s free gift in Jesus has given us access to the very heart of God, and we not only have the assurance that we will be received into eternal life, but we have confidence that we can approach the Lord with all of our struggles and problems at any time, day or night.

The palace doors are open!  Come unto Him, all you who are weary and heavy laden, and He will give you rest!
