“Behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.”
1 Kings 19:11b-12 New King James Version
Do you remember a season in life when there seemed to be chaos at home and work? It may have been a crisis, or a change in what was a regular routine. Recently, my attention has been drawn in multiple directions as changes have occurred at work as well as at home, and some short-term tasks took priority on my available time.
I’m tackling each task, but most of the time it feels as if I’m getting nothing accomplished.
In 1 Kings 19, the prophet Elijah had just scored a victory over the priests of Baal, a false god who was leading the Israelites away from God. Now he was running from an enraged queen who sought to kill him. Imagine going from being on top of the world, with God on your side, to total chaos and wondering where God is?
While I don’t fear for my life, I’m beginning to realize who’s behind my chaos.
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
Psalm 46:10a English Standard Version
It’s at times like this that the enemy wants you to think that God has pressing business elsewhere. He wants you to believe that you are alone. When you’re feeling alone, take a moment from spinning plates and stop.
Sit down.
Talk to God. Be still. Listen for the still small voice.
“For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.”
Psalm 62:1-2 English Standard Version
God’s pressing business is you. Your salvation is assured by the blood of Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit will help you weather the storms until the sun shines again.
You may be stirred, but you’ll not be shaken.
