“When Jesus saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”
Matthew 9:36 New International Version
Sometimes our lives are a mess. All the cares and burdens of the world feel like they are on our shoulders. The world seems to be beating us up. Enemies appear ready to pounce on us from every side. Life is a mess!
Jesus saw the crowds of people and He had compassion on them, for they “were harassed and helpless”. They were confused and beat up and scared and without hope. They were in big trouble. They were “like sheep without a shepherd”. Not only was their situation desperate, they had no capacity, no strength, no resources to change their desperate situation. They were like helpless sheep that needed a shepherd.
Jesus sees you and me in our desperate situation and He has compassion upon us. He is the Good Shepherd who cares for His sheep. He rescues His sheep. He watches over His sheep. He even lays down His life for the sheep.
And He saves us and has mercy upon us, so that we might have compassion on those who are harassed and helpless, without hope in this life. He calls you and me to take the Good News of the Good Shepherd to all the world. To a world that is a mess. To people who are like sheep without a shepherd.
Jesus has rescued you and watches over you. And He calls you to bring the Savior to the crowds of people who need Him.
Lord, thank you that you have had mercy upon me and saved me. Send me into a world that is really messed up and needs you. Give me your compassion and love. Amen.
