Planting Seeds

It Begins With Just One Seed

“The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field.  It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
Matthew 13:31-32 English Standard Version

This is the time of year in Oregon to plant pea seed.  We plant the seeds in the ground, trusting that the seeds will germinate and emerge from the soil and grow tall vines and leaves and produce many more peas.  Right now, it doesn’t look like much is going on, but we trust God will give the growth.

Sharing the Good News of Jesus with people is like planting seeds.  As we share Jesus with others, we plant the living Word of God in their hearts and minds and pray that the Word that we have planted will germinate and grow and one day fully bear fruit and produce more seeds that will be planted in others.

As we share with others it may not look like much is happening at first.  The seed that we have planted may seem to be dormant, the hearer seemingly unaffected by the Good News of Jesus. But we trust that as we continue to share the message of Jesus, of His salvation from sin and death and the devil, that the Word will begin to grow in them.

And when that message of God’s mercy germinates and grows, we do all that we can to encourage the growth of Jesus Christ in their lives.  For the Holy Spirit can take such a small thing as sharing Jesus with another person and grow it up into a mighty harvest that will in turn be planted into many more people’s lives.

Lord, give me faith to trust that as I share the Good News of Jesus, Your Holy Spirit will cause that Word to grow and bear much fruit that all may know salvation in Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
