Thanksgiving…giving thanks…thanks…praise. Here we are at the “most wonderful time of the year.” For some it’s a gathering of those you love the most. It may be a time to see family members that have been busy with work, children, and life to experience a day or two to slow down and really connect with the people in front of us.

Thanksgiving can also be a lot of work and stress for those that are preparing the meal, cleaning their homes, and decorating. The holidays mean traveling to gather and sometimes rushing to partake in multiple meals over a one or two day span for some.

Thanksgiving may also cause anxiety or disappointment for many who have challenging family situations. Navigating the day or two by holding your breath can lead to constant thoughts hoping time passes quickly so we can resume our normal schedule. Family is not a formula, it does not come with a manual and it can be hard. There are times when we draw close and push back from family members who may, or may not, mean well.

How do we approach the holidays when we have fantastic family situations, but even more when we don’t have ideal family gatherings?

“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 ESV

Rejoice, pray, and give thanks; this is the formula for Thanksgiving. Praise God, even if you can’t praise Him for your family, praise him for who He is in the situation. Worshipping before you go to events with your family will fill you up with the Holy Spirit. Praying for each family member before you see them will soften your heart toward them.

Lastly, let God protect you as you go into events this week.

“The Lord is my strength and my shield; in him my heart trusts, and I am helped; my heart exults, and with my song I give thanks to him.” Psalm 28:7 ESV

God is for you, He sees every hard thing you’re doing, He sees the effort you’re putting forth with your family. Partner with Jesus to walk into the events this week covered, protected, and loved to bring peace to your gathering(s) and yourself.
