“Lord, hear my prayer!
    Listen to my plea!
Don’t turn away from me
    in my time of distress.
Bend down to listen,
and answer me quickly when I call to you.”
Psalm 102:1-2 New Living Translation

A woman had cancer, prayed for healing, went through treatment and was cured. Then her brother received a cancer diagnosis and she prayed for his healing, but he died. Because of this she felt she could no longer believe in God who let her live but would take her brother’s life. She was hurt, angry and questioned why God didn’t answer her prayers in the way that she desired.

We focus so intensely on questions about how God answers our prayers that we lose all perspective, believing that we know better than God what He should do for us or others. After all, what we ask Him in prayer is what we assume will happen. Yet we forget that His responses to our prayers always fulfill His purpose and plan first, even when we don’t understand or agree.  We lose sight of how faithful, merciful and kind God has been in our lives and overlook His promise to never fail us.

When we pray that God’s will be done, we are surrendering the outcome to Him. That’s not an easy task. We must lean on His word that He can do more than we ask or imagine, more than our prayers request of Him, even though that might look differently than we hoped.

Fortunately, the Holy Spirit reveals the promises of God when you are disappointed by the answers to your heartfelt prayers. Allow Him to open your spiritual eyes to show you how He works through sorrow and pain for a greater purpose. Remember His blessings and unfailing love to you, trusting Him with the outcome to your prayers.
