“God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?”
Numbers 23:19, English Standard Version
At times, we see the world around us and all the bad news that comes with it. Or, we are struggling with our own issues and we feel impatient during those seasons of life. I tend to be impatient and sometimes I have the problem of thinking too far ahead. I can see where I’m headed, and then I get frustrated that I’m not already there. If I do not lean on God in these times then I can let the present slip away, and I’m not fully devoted to doing what God wants me to do right now.
“Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.”
Matthew 6:34 English Standard Version
In other words, God tells us that today has enough in store for us to be wholly committed to that day’s work. We don’t bring tomorrow to its fulfillment, only God does that, and we must be committed to what God has for us today. God has promised us that if we have trust in Him our future is secure, and in the end we get to be with Him. So we will be okay!
Many people are obsessed with predicting the day when Jesus will return to the earth. Others, like me, wonder what is taking so long for the Lord to come back. However, just as God promised to send the world a Savior for humanity in Jesus Christ, and fulfilled that promise through Mary, likewise He will someday fulfill the promise of His return. God is perfect and unchanging. How then can He make promises without fulfilling His promises? He is infinitely trustworthy. Today, let us rest in His love and mercy, and leave tomorrow in God’s hands.
