Twigs from Cottonwood Trees

Whenever we have strong winds the smaller branches from our cottonwood tree, and unfortunately our neighbor’s tree, break off and litter our backyard with hundreds of twigs. Within the past few weeks we’ve had some intense winds, and so our yard is covered again. Picking up sticks is a very tedious job, but since it happens every time we have a windstorm it’s a very meaningless task.

As King Solomon got older he began reflecting on his life, searching for meaning and significance, but he saw everything as futile and meaningless. Like people today he tried to find meaning in his work, in pleasure, in seeking greater intelligence…and everything came up short. These thoughts are still prevalent today as we easily see the lives of others.

Photos on Facebook, or Instagram, are only snapshots captured of a moment in time, not based in any reality of day-to-day events, yet we long for the life we think others are living. We see these images and expect more out of life than we often get, then blame God for not making us wealthier, happier, and more fulfilled. Depression and anxiety rule our lives.

Gratefully, Solomon’s search for meaning ended with God’s wisdom. He wrote:

“Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least, that is good. It is good for people to eat, drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during the short life God has given them, and to accept their lot in life. And it is a good thing to receive wealth from God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy your work and accept your lot in life—this is indeed a gift from God. God keeps such people so busy enjoying life that they take no time to brood over the past.”
Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 New Living Translation

Have you struggled with misplaced pursuits in life? Does your life lack the meaning and purpose you desire? May Solomon’s words encourage you to place your life in the hand of the loving, faithful Lord!
