Surrounded by Light

The Word of Light That Walks with Us

Does your life resemble a journey on this path? Study this trail carefully. Look at what it would take to reach the end. What are the dangers? There are hazards all along this path. There are rocks over which you might stumble, trees that might fall on you, and dangers hidden in the shadows.

And yet there is light; light along the journey and light at the end.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105 English Standard Version

If you have read many of the Praying With The Eyes devotions, you can probably recite this passage from memory. Every year confirmands have this verse spoken over them. These words might pop up on your computer screen as a reminder of the power of God’s word in your life.

But let’s get back to the journey. Life’s journey takes thought, perseverance, and courage. Instead of letting life happen to us, we ought to be thoughtful and purposeful about the journey. Perseverance is needed for the struggles that we face. Courage is needed when the unexpected falls on us.

The word that we carry with us on this journey, the word that is our light is the Word made flesh.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14 ESV

If the Word is flesh, then the Word walks this journey with us. If he walks with us then he invades our thoughts, gives us endurance, and gifts us with courage for the journey. If he is with us, then he is the light even in the shadows of our lives.

I don’t know where you are on this journey that will one day lead us into the presence of the Word made flesh. You might be basking in the light. You might feel like you are dwelling in the shadows. Maybe there is a sense of dread that disaster is around the corner. The light of Jesus presence is with you today and always no matter where you are. He is the light on your journey.
