Perfect Peace

You can listen to today’s devotion by clicking this SoundCloud link.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27 ESV

We like to be in control. We have moments when we want to surrender and let God take over. And then, true to form, we take it right back. Why? Something in us just refuses to “let go and let God” (as we see on all the encouraging merchandise). We can become so tightly wound with worry, fear, shame and self-centeredness. Because of our desire to make sure everything goes according to OUR plan, we find ourselves exhausted, irritable…worse for wear,  It’s as if we forget in those moments that He is the one with good plans. He fulfills promises, never fails, does not leave or forsake us. He guides and provides. He restores our soul. (And that’s just scratching the surface)

How about our track record? What have WE done for us? I shake my head in response. What has the world done for us? Same reaction. Don’t forget the people we love. Try as they might, they’re in the same flawed and sinful situation! Praise God we are not the author of our story. We are not the curators of peace. Perfect peace, the peace that surpasses all understanding, is only found in Him. The hymn writer describes it perfectly:

“Then in fellowship sweet, we will sit at his feet, or we’ll walk by his side in the way. What he says we will do, where he sends we will go, never fear only trust and obey.” (Sammis & Towner, 1887)

I hope this sweet melody sticks with us today. Take a big inhale as you gather up the prayer requests and all the worries that consume your mind. Gently relax that grip and release on the exhale as you let God take control. Peace be with you.
