The Dance of Light

This is not the first time that I’ve written a devotion referencing light and the importance of what light does. When I first set up my camera for this picture (a process that took some time) the light was dancing through the leaves and grabbed by attention as it landed on these Cottonwood trees. However, when I was ready to take the picture, the light was muted by clouds. There wasn’t the contrast I wanted. So I waited, hoping that the sun would once again dance its way through the leaves.

My patience was rewarded. I clicked the shutter and the light again danced, only this time on the 4×5 sheet of film in my camera making the silver halide crystals go crazy.

“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Psalm 119:105 English Standard Version

God created feet for dancing. I’m not suggesting that we all take dance lessons. I’ve done that and I still look like a fish out of water. I’m not sure King David was a great dancer, yet he danced with all his might before the Lord (2 Samuel 6:14).

The light of God’s word causes us to dance on the path of our lives.

God’s word, like light, is always doing something. His word is at work in us always pointing us to the cross and the empty tomb, molding our lives to the good news that our sins are forgiven and that we have abundant life now and into eternity.

The rich man who approached Jesus and asked what he had to do to earn eternal life didn’t dance when he left Jesus. He thought that eternal life depended on what he brought to the table. There was no light in which he could dance. However, the dance floor is wide and the music is wonderful when we see Christ shining his light into our lives.

I hope that you find the light of Jesus giving you a reason to dance today.
